Postdoc position: tendon mechanobiology (tissue engineered models and epigenetic regulation) in Zürich

Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.

Jobbeschreibung

80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term

We are jointly affiliated with the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich. Both are world-leading, renowned for excellent education, cutting-edge fundamental research and direct transfer of new knowledge into society. Over 70,000 people from more than 120 countries enjoy this environment that promotes independent thinking and inspires scientific excellence. The Balgrist University Hospital is a leading academic centre for orthopaedic research, with outstanding access to patients and clinician-scientists. Located in the heart of Europe, yet forging connections all over the world, we are working together to develop solutions for the human health challenges of today and tomorrow.

  • Musculoskeletal disorders account for more than half of all human years lived with a disability.
  • Approximately 30% of general practice consultations for musculoskeletal pain are related to tendon disorders,
  • We are a leading scientific group focused on mechanobiology in tendon health in disease and seek a new team member.
Project background

This competitively funded project aims to uncover key mechanisms of dense connective tissue homeostasis and disease. Toward this goal, we will generate and analyze large and powerful multi-omic datasets (10X joint snRNA-ATAC-seq, small volume proteomic analysis) using human cells and engineered tissues under physiological and pathological mechanical loads. These data will be benchmarked against human patient biopsies and relevant animal models to identify clinically relevant mechanisms of disease.

Job description

You will be responsible for the biological interpretation of these integrated datasets and will develop follow-up projects inspired by the insights these data yield. Follow-up experiments may include orthogonal validation (in situ sequencing, 3D tissue imaging) as well as functional studies using tissue-engineered models of tendon disease (with patient-derived cells) or high content screening using appropriate models available in our group.

Your profile

You should have a track record in cell biology, ideally with a strong interest in the extracellular matrix. Experience with single-cell / spatial genomic or high-throughput functional assays is desirable. We are looking for an independent individual who can craft their projects, yet wishes to work collaboratively in achieving more large-scale scientific goals. You will play a vital role in writing up your studies and supporting the writing efforts of those you supervise. You will be embedded in, and contribute to, a supportive, world-leading and multidisciplinary research environment.
