Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.
The Ultrafast Dynamics Group (Prof. Steven Johnson) in the Department of Physics of ETH Zürich has an open PhD position.
The ultrafast dynamics group studies the electronic and structural dynamics of solid-state materials on time scales ranging from femtoseconds to picoseconds. By understanding and to some extent controlling these dynamics, we investigate new ways to control such materials on time scales well beyond state-of-the-art methods for materials modification. We also gain unique insights into the mechanisms that lead to the functionality of many modern materials.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to investigate the optical properties of materials which are undergoing periodic modulations of atomic and/or magnetic structure. The goal is to study several regimes of light-phonon and light-magnon interaction and their potential applications for photonic and material control. Part of the research is done using pump-probe THz spectroscopy, and part using time-resolved x-ray spectroscopy.
This project will be based in Prof. Steven Johnson’s Ultrafast Dynamics Group at ETH Zürich, and will also involve significant interaction with personnel at the Paul Scherrer Institute. X-ray measurements will take place at large-scale facilities both in Switzerland and abroad.
ETH Zurich is a family-friendly employer with excellent working conditions. You can look forward to an exciting working environment, cultural diversity and attractive offers and benefits.
