The Transdisciplinarity-Lab (TdLab) at the Department of Environmental Systems Science (D-USYS) offers a rich and lively learning environment. Our research and teaching cross disciplinary boundaries and are organized in close collaboration with colleagues from different disciplinary backgrounds and stakeholders. The Group “Cultural Studies of Science” (CSTS), in which this position is embedded, is a dynamic team investigating methods and theories for transdisciplinary research.  

Project background

We seek one doctoral researcher to join our team for the project «Co-Evolution and Coordinated Simulation of the Swiss Energy System and Swiss Society» (Cosi), funded by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy. 

The project will extend models and simulation-based assessments to account for Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) research of the energy systems to conduct a successful energy transition in Switzerland. The project will bridge the different energy research communities and establish a continuous exchange between researchers and stakeholders. It will also test new approaches to harmonize scenarios and narratives and provide an integration toolbox for SSH research. 

Fixed-term position: 4 years. Start date: June 1, 2023.

Job description

You will study collaborative energy cases between modelers and SSH in Switzerland to identify successful practices. You will work in close collaboration with research partners and a diverse group of stakeholders. 

Your tasks include to:

  • Develop your PhD project related to the Cosi project’s main aims together with your supervisors and peers;
  • Conduct qualitative research, including a systematic literature review;
  • Perform qualitative interviews to relevant actors in Switzerland;
  • Collaborate with other team members to co-organize workshops and complete deliverables (in the form of reports);
  • Participate in the STS and energy communities nationally and internationally;
  • Contribute to the CSTS Group in consolidating its research program.
Your profile
  • Master’s degree in social anthropology, sociology, STS (science and society studies) or other related social sciences. 
  • The Master’s degree must have been obtained and the final evaluation must be available by the application deadline.
  • Experience with qualitative research methods and interpretative social theory. 
  • Interest in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and engaging with modelers stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with STS concepts and prior knowledge of the field of energy transitions is highly desirable. 
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently, excellent organizational skills, high reliability, and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent proficiency in English. Proficiency in German is a strong advantage.
