The Institute of Machine Tools and Manufacturing (IWF) at ETH Zurich performs internationally leading research on machine tools and in the field of production engineering. We are looking for an intern with informatics background for support on a new research project with close industrial contact.

Project background

The IWF process research group is aiming to develop a modular software tool for abrasives processes in general, called iBRUS. For two decades IWF carries out research on abrasive processes like grinding, lapping, wire sawing, and hard broaching. For consolidating the piled-up knowledge of several research projects a simulation framework with a modular structure is intended and the results attained so far shall be ported into this framework. This framework shall be used as a basis for further research in the field and shall allow us to easily integrate new kinematics, concepts and meta-models. user interfaces shall be designed also and leave sufficient flexibility for future research.

Job description

Your task is to further develop codes already written in Python in collaboration with colleagues knowledgeable in abrasive processes. Additionally, the Python code should be developed modularly, allowing easy integration of new processes, kinematics, functions, equations, etc. A user interface development is also required.

Your profile
  • Excellent programming skills in Python
  • Master's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Automation, or a closely related field, or a Bachelor's degree with relevant experience
  • Strong knowledge of Process Design 
  • Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., NX, Solidworks, AutoCAD)
  • Ability to work with measuring test equipment 
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to write clear and concise documentation
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong technical skills and an interest in learning about new technologies and techniques
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English
