The Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Group within the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, focuses on the development of novel acquisition and image reconstruction methods. We are looking for a doctoral candidate to work on the optimization and control of advanced imaging sensors, image reconstruction techniques, and their applications in collaboration with Sony Research Europe.

Project background

Modern imaging sensors offer significant improvements in performance, energy efficiency, and manufacturing costs thanks to their on-the-fly controllable acquisition parameters. The PhD project aims at optimizing acquisition and control strategies for various novel image sensors including event-based vision sensors to maximize the extracted information from the scene and improve the performance of machine learning tasks. The research will also involve the development of image reconstruction techniques that further enhance applications in medical imaging.

Job description

The PhD position involves researching and developing sensor control strategies, sensor simulation, and optimization of acquisition parameters for various sensor technologies. You will also work on advanced image reconstruction techniques and their applications. In close collaboration with researchers and engineers, you help to enable practical applications of imaging sensor optimization. Additionally, you will contribute to the preparation and publication of research papers in high-impact journals and conference processing as well as to patent invention reports.

Your profile

You hold a first-class MSc degree in computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, physics, or applied mathematics:

  • Experience in imaging sensors, computer vision, optimization, numerical linear algebra, and machine learning is highly desirable
  • Solid knowledge of inverse problems, numerical linear algebra, and Bayesian statistics is required
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as Python as well as experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch are essential
  • Interest in medical imaging and image reconstruction techniques is a plus

Throughout the project, you will receive support from Sony engineers and participate in regular alignment meetings, occasional presentations, and progress evaluations. Available resources include advanced image data simulation, streaming and processing machines, as well as state-of-the-art local and scalable cloud-based, compute infrastructure (CPU, GPU).
