The Chair of Energy Systems Analysis (ESA), within the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT) at ETH Zurich, is looking for a Student Assistant to support research and administration during the start-up phase of the Chair. The Chair holder’s joint appointment as the Head of the Laboratory of Energy Systems Analysis (LEA) at  means a strong collaboration with and support of this Lab is also desirable.

Project background

The ESA Chair is at the intersection of engineering and economics and involves developing and applying energy system models to diverse energy systems and research questions. The ESA group is headed by Prof. Dr Russell McKenna and generally focuses on the optimization and assessment of complex systems and infrastructures with an emphasis on environmentally and economically efficient design and operations.

Job description

You will support the ESA Chair with general research-related tasks relating to ongoing projects, e.g. literature reviews, data analysis, reference management, and (depending on experience) energy system modelling. The role also includes tasks such as website design and management, designing and contributing to wikis, and supporting ongoing teaching and research projects in the group.

In addition, you will support the ongoing strategic development of LEA at PSI and help to foster collaboration between the two groups, ESA and LEA. The position is being offered at 15 hours/week during the semester and up to 100% at other times. Working hours and location are flexible to reflect varying workloads and study commitments.

Your profile
  • We are looking for a proactive, highly motivated, and well-organised person, studying for an MSc (or equivalent Master's degree) in a quantitative discipline (such as engineering, informatics, or economics)
  • Ideally, you have a background in and/or experience in website design and management, wikis, and advanced Microsoft office skills
  • Technical programming skills (e.g. Matlab, Python, Julia, GAMS) are advantageous but not essential
  • An interest in and understanding of energy transition and related topics is also advantageous
  • You should be able to speak and write clearly in English
