The, led by Professor Tatjana Kleele, is part of the ETH Department of Biology. Our research combines super-resolution microscopy and automated image analysis with molecular biology and proteomics to investigate how mitochondrial remodeling supports cell-and tissue-specific functions, particularly in the nervous system.
A decline in mitochondrial health is a hallmark of many neurodegenerative disorders, but mitochondrial plasticity is also a major contributor to neuronal maturation and plasticity. Within the framework of an SNF Starting Grant, this project aims to investigate the molecular mechanisms and regulatory pathways ensuring mitochondrial health and function in neurons. In human iPSC-derived and rat primary DRG neurons, we will explore how mitochondria are remodeled during neuronal maturation, under high electrical activity, and in pathological conditions.
Deciphering the molecular mechanisms controlling mitochondrial homeostasis in neurons will advance our knowledge of how mitochondrial and metabolism are regulated in neurons and how disbalances in these processes result in pathology.
