Trainee in design and development of the P3 HTS NI solenoid control and quench detection systems

Das Paul Scherrer Institute PSI ist das größte Forschungsinstitut für Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften in der Schweiz. Hier erwartet dich die Möglichkeit, an zukunftsweisenden Technologien zu arbeiten.

Für das PSI Center for Accelerator Science and Engineering we are looking for a

Your tasks

The P3 (PSI positron production) project is the proposed proof of principle experiment for the FCC-ee planned to start in Q3 2026, aims to demonstrate a high-yield positron source. One of the most challenging elements of the experiment is the capture solenoid magnet around the target. To meet the requirements of the experiment, a novel approach using HTS (high temperature superconductor) NI (non insulated) coils is proposed.

To ensure smooth and safe operation of the experiment, the magnet control and quench detection systems need to be developed and integrated into the machine operational structure. The main objectives and tasks of the student will be:
  • Understanding of magnet control and quench detection systems (power supply control, temperature and voltage monitoring)
  • Defining different operation and protection scenarios
  • Selection of the best software/hardware architecture
  • Implementation and test of the system
  • Integration of the system into machine protection architecture

Your profile

  • You are an engineering or physics student (minimum 4 years)
  • Knowledge in LabVIEW programming and communication protocols (OPC/UA)
  • Knowledge in electronic and hardware data acqusition systems (NI DAQ, FPGA)
  • You are open-minded, communicative, and you enjoy working in an international team
  • You have not yet completed your Master’s thesis

We offer
