The Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC) is a National Research Infrastructure jointly founded by EPFL and ETH Zurich and part of the ETH Domain. Its mandate is to support academic labs, hospitals, the industry and public sector stakeholders, including cantonal and federal administrations, through their entire data science journey, from the collection and management of data to machine learning, AI, and industrialization.

With a large multidisciplinary team of professionals across three locations (Lausanne, Zurich, Villigen), the SDSC provides expertise and services to various domains, such as health and biomedical sciences, energy and sustainability, climate and environment, and large-scale scientific infrastructures.

In the framework of a collaboration with experts in architecture and engineering, we have developed a tool called

AIXD

for AI-assisted forward and inverse design. Currently, we are developing a plugin to enable Virtual Reality (VR) exploration of the design space, aiming to improve the interpretability and understanding of the possibilities and limitations of the problem. This involves implementing additional embedding models in the AIXD Python core to capture the structure and organization of the geometries within the design space.

Therefore, we are offering an internship at the Research Team at SDSC to continue investigating embedding models, implementing and evaluating them, and developing new features for the AIXD toolbox. You will collaborate with domain experts and other data scientists to ensure the successful development of these new AIXD’s features. Additionally, as part of the SDSC, you will be part of a dynamic team working on applying machine learning methods to various fields, from environmental to political sciences, which will allow you to gain a deeper understanding of how these methods are applied across different domains, as well as the skills needed for interdisciplinary research.

If you are proficient in Python and software development, knowledgeable about ML methods, and eager to pursue interesting interdisciplinary research, we need someone like you to advance this project!

• Conduct the software development of the AIXD toolbox by implementing new features
• Investigate new embedding methods to capture the structure and organization of the space of designs
• Implement new visualization approaches that help understand the data and AIXD results
• Carry out standard tasks of debugging and documentation of the AIXD toolbox

• You are a developer with a BSc or MSc in Computer Science or related fields, with proven experience in software development
• You have experience with Python, PyTorch and UI frameworks such as Flask
• You have expertise in machine learning and data science
• You know how to present complex results as appealing and informative plots
