The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

For the Advanced Muon Spectroscopy (AMS) Project of the Laboratory for Muon Spin Spectroscopy, we are looking for a PhD Student to be enrolled at the University of Zurich. The project is dedicated to developing a novel method for muon spin spectroscopy using monolithic Si-pixel detectors. This innovative approach aims to increase data collection rates (40k ⇒ >400k muons/second), enable measurements on smaller samples (16mm2 ⇒ 1mm2), and achieve lateral resolution on the millimeter scale.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of detector development, condensed matter physics and material science, in collaboration with an international team of researchers.

Your tasks

  • Design and simulate a Si-pixel-based muon spin spectrometer
  • Contribute to the development of data acquisition and reconstruction software
  • Perform and support muon spin rotation (μSR) experiments
  • Collaborate in detector integration and system optimization
  • Participate in teaching and graduate school activities at the University of Zurich

Your profile

  • Master degree (or equivalent) in Physics
  • Strong interest in instrumentation, data analysis, and experimental techniques
  • Programming skills (C++, Python, ROOT) are a strong asset
  • Background in condensed matter physics or materials science is an advantage
  • Familiarity with detector technology and data acquisition is beneficial
  • Good command of English (spoken and written)

We offer

Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
