The Center for Law and Economics at ETH Zurich conducts empirical research on the law and economics of innovation.
We are looking for a student assistant with Python skills and an interest in data science to assist with empirical research on law and economics. The applicant should have intermediate to advanced Python experience, with the following skills considered desirable: (1) Data checks, cleaning, and merging (pandas) (2) Data summary and visualisation in pandas and matplotlib (or seaborn, ggplot, etc) (3) Text mining and natural language processing (NLTK, spaCy, etc.) (4) Web scraping (urllib, robobrowser) (5) Machine learning (sklearn) (6) Deep learning (Keras, TensorFlow, Edward, etc.) (7) Database management (psycopg2, django) (8) Software collaboration (Jupyter notebooks, GitHub).
The research investigates empirical questions in law and economics, public economics, and political economy, with a focus on text analysis of legal and political documents. Topics include the determinants and consequences of the behavior of judges, politicians and voters.
Within our team, you will have the opportunity to work in close connection with ETH Scientific IT services (a highly diverse group of data science experts, see https://sis.id.ethz.ch). You will develop your Python and Data Science skills using state-of-the-art technologies (Jupyter Notebook, pandas).
