The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is a part of the ETH domain. Approximately 500 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

The Research Unit Forest Soils and Biogeochemistry investigates how properties and functions of forest soils and biogeochemical processes depend on external factors such as contaminant input, climatic change and forest management. The research group rhizosphere processes, in collaboration with the University of Bern and the SwissForestLab, is offering a 2-year position as a
You will retrieve sediment cores from two sites in the Southern Swiss Alps. You will analyze the cores for pollen, macrofossils and charcoal to reconstruct the local to regional vegetation and fire history since the last Ice Age. Furthermore, you will extract and analyze ancient DNA (aDNA) from selected macrofossils of different tree species and time periods in a designated aDNA facility to study the effects of climate change and environmental disturbances on the genetic diversity of past tree populations. You will present the results of the study to a professional audience and publish them in international scientific journals. You will supervise MSc and BSc students and actively participate in teaching at a University.
You have a PhD in palaeoecology, environmental sciences, earth sciences, biology or an equivalent field. You have experience with pollen and macrofossil analyses and you are familiar with aDNA analysis, as well as fieldwork in high mountain environments. You have a sound knowledge of natural archives and palaeoecological methods such as age-depth modelling and ordination techniques, as well as population genetic processes. You have a well-documented experience in writing scientific articles and good communication and organization skills. You are a creative, reliable researcher that likes to work in an international dynamic team and have a very good command of English.
