PhD Position in the field of 3D printing of Fe-based shape memory alloys (SMA) for novel structural metamaterials and "smart" structures in Lausanne

For a collaborative project between the Alloy Design for Advanced Processing Technologies (ADAPT) group at Empa and the Advanced Surface Coatings & Processing group at Korean Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), Busan, South Korea. The goal is the development of a cost-efficient Fe-Mn-Si based SMA for laser-based additive manufacturing, its characterization as well as the design of novel structural metamaterials and smart structures for civil engineering applications that make use of the unique properties of the SMA. The prospective student will be enrolled at the doctoral school of EPF Lausanne () under the co-supervision of Prof. Patrik Hoffmann and Dr. Christian Leinenbach.

The candidate should have a Master degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering or Applied Physics. A strong background in the science and technology of metallic materials as well as an interest in laser-based materials processing technologies are important. Additional skills in materials characterization (e.g. OM, SEM, XRD, thermo-mechanical testing) and/or materials modeling and simulation techniques (finite elements, computational thermodynamics) would be a benefit.

A strong desire to work at the leading edge of materials technology and a high level of motivation to work in an international, multidisciplinary research team in the field of materials science are essential. The candidate should have a clear interest to work in an application-oriented research environment in close-collaboration with our industrial and academic partners. Good knowledge of English (oral and written) is mandatory. Knowledge of German would be an advantage. The full-time position is available immediately or upon agreement.
