PhD position in the field of Fundamental Understanding of Internal Stress in Miscible and Immiscible Nanomultilayers in Zürich

EMPA (European Master of Public Administration Consortium) is a network of European schools, that offer master programs in public administration.

Jobbeschreibung

Project goal: to investigate the residual growth stresses in immiscible (Cu/W), miscible (Mo/W) and semi-miscible (Cr/W) multilayers systems as function of the deposition parameters (pressure, temperature, thickness and periodicity), microstructure and interface chemistry. The obtained know-how will allow the tuning of chemical, mechanical, thermal and optical properties in nanomultilayered coatings by targeted microstructural design and stress engineering for applications in the fields of e.g. nanojoining, microelectronics, optics and corrosion protection.

Your tasks: We are looking for an intrinsically motivated person to perform systematic experimental investigations of the microstructure-properties relationship of nanomultilayers as function of the growth and post-processing conditions using a unique integrated UHV setup. The candidate will:

  • Fabricate different metallic nanomultilayers by magnetron sputtering while monitoring the internal stresses during growth and post-processing by an in-situ wafer curvature technique
  • Characterize the microstructure and interface chemical state of the grown multilayers using a broad range of analytical techniques, including high resolution Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), advanced X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and in-situ X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (combined XPS/HAXPES). Dedicated synchrotron studies at a later stage of the project are also envisaged.

Your profile: You own a master degree in material science, physics or a relevant engineering field with hands-on experience on thin-film growth and microstructural characterizations using diffraction and/or photoemission techniques. Particularly relevant are practical experiences on film/multilayers deposition by magnetron sputtering with in-situ stress analysis. Strong backgrounds in the following areas are a clear advantage: materials science, thin films, diffraction techniques (e.g. XRD and TEM), surface and microstructure analysis (SEM and HAXPES/XPS). Excellent knowledge of English (oral and written) is mandatory. German is an advantage. The ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary research environment is essential. Personal initiative, ability to work systematically, reliability, responsibility, teamwork and communication skills are a must.

We offer: The position is available from 1st October 2020 (or later upon agreement). The 4-year PhD project is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation and will be held in collaboration with ETH Zürich. The candidate will be stationed in Dübendorf and enrolled in the doctoral program of ETH.
