Postdoc position on designing new lightweight Mg-based materials guided by atomistic simulations in Thun

EMPA (European Master of Public Administration Consortium) is a network of European schools, that offer master programs in public administration.

Jobbeschreibung

About the position:

We are looking for a highly motivated young scientist - an expert in ab initio and classical molecular dynamics as well as Monte Carlo simulations - to model processes associated with deformation and corrosion of Mg-based materials. We offer a world-class mentorship, an excellent infrastructure, and broad interdisciplinary surroundings with plenty of possibilities for personal and professional development. Due to a high world interest in lightweight materials, a research experience acquired in this program will guarantee exciting future opportunities both in academia and industry, nationally and internationally. The postdoc will be working at the Laboratory for Advanced Materials Processing in Thun, next to Bern, Switzerland, under the supervision of Dr Vladyslav Turlo – the leading Empa's expert in largescale atomistic simulations of metals, alloys, and nanocomposites. Close collaboration with the experimentalists from different groups and laboratories at Empa is essential.

Your profile:

You hold a Ph.D. degree obtained no more than 2 years ago in computational physics or chemistry, mechanical engineering, materials science, or a closely related field as documented by a strong publication track record. You can demonstrate a fundamental understanding of mechanisms of deformation and corrosion in metallic alloys with a focus on interatomic interactions and reactivity. You have 3+ years of experience in ab initio (Quantum Espresso, VASP) and classical (LAMMPS) molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations and excellent programming skills in Python. Prior experience in the development of reactive (ReaxFF) and non-reactive (EAM, MEAM) force fields using DFT data would be an advantage. A strong desire to work at the leading edge of materials technology and a high level of motivation to work in an international, multidisciplinary research team in the field of materials science are essential. You have a clear interest to work in an application-oriented research environment in close collaboration with our industrial and academic partners. Good knowledge of English (oral and written) is mandatory. Knowledge of German or French would be an advantage.

The full-time position is limited to one year with the possibility of extension. The position is available immediately or upon agreement.
