Your tasks
You will work on applied research projects funded by InnoSuisse as well as on basic science projects on the design, synthesis, and analysis of hierarchical metamaterials. You will design and optimize structures for improved functionality and performance, synthesize them in cooperation with other lab members by processes such as two photon lithography, electrodeposition, and atomic layer deposition, and characterize them using cutting edge analytical techniques based on scanning and transmission electron microscopy as well as in situ micromechanical testing under extreme conditions (variable temperature and high strain rate).
Your profile
You must hold a PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or similar. A high level of motivation to work in close collaboration with industry, experimentalists and an international, multidisciplinary research teams is essential. Experience in mechanical design, experimentation, and analysis, clean room processes, and analytical techniques such as EBSD or EDX is desirable.
The Laboratory for Mechanics of Materials and Nanostructures of Empa in Thun offers an ideal working environment, with state-of-the art equipment (complete cleanroom processing line for lithography and galvanoforming, high level of materials analysis facilities, state of the art of in situ micromechanical in-strumentation). The city is situated in a beautiful area near the mountains in the German-speaking part of Switzerland.
Applicants are invited for a 1-year appointment (extendable up to 5 years) starting from May 2021.
