Postdoc in ab initio thermodynamics of high-temperature interfaces in Dübendorf

EMPA (European Master of Public Administration Consortium) is a network of European schools, that offer master programs in public administration.

Jobbeschreibung

This project is part of our joint efforts with  in the computational design of new advanced materials for laser 3D printing applications. At the same time in LAMP, we apply extensive expertise in process design, monitoring, and control as well as state-of-the-art multiphysics modeling and machine learning techniques towards designing Digital Twins for Laser Metal 3D printers, significantly reducing the trial-and-error experimental efforts in simultaneous process - material optimization (). Specifically for this project, we are using with our world-unique setup of simultaneous injection of metal powder and reinforcement nanoparticles, which allows for local modification and fine-tuning of process-microstructure-property relations during .

The ab initio-informed choice of the reinforcement material, nanoparticle size, and processing conditions for each metal alloy require estimating the interfacial composition, structure and properties in multiphase solid-liquid-gas environments at elevated temperatures. As the first step towards this direction, we plan to use ab initio molecular dynamics combined with grand canonical Monte Carlo and active learning approaches to reach the required time and length scales for predicting the effect of different nanoparticle materials on the surface tension of liquid-gas interfaces at different temperatures, pressures and alloy compositions.

The research is multidisciplinary and requires close collaboration with experimentalists as well as multiphysics modeling and machine learning experts in the lab. We offer a world-class mentorship, an excellent infrastructure, and broad interdisciplinary surroundings with plenty of possibilities for personal and professional development. Due to a high world interest in additive manufacturing of metals and alloys, the research experience acquired in this program will guarantee exciting future opportunities both in academia and industry, nationally and internationally. The workplace will be at Empa in Thun, next to Bern, Switzerland.
Your profile:
You hold a Ph.D. degree obtained no more than 2 years ago in computational physics, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field as documented by a strong publication track record in this field. You have 4+ years of experience with ab initio molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods applied to heterogeneous interfaces as well as interest and experience with machine learning interatomic potential development and/or active learning approaches. Prior experience with workflow management tools (AiiDA, Pyiron) would be an advantage.

A strong desire to work at the leading edge of materials technology and a high level of motivation to work in an international, multidisciplinary research team in the field of materials science are essential. You have a clear interest to work in an application-oriented research environment in close collaboration with our industrial and academic partners. Good knowledge of English (oral and written) is mandatory. Knowledge of German or French would be an advantage. The full-time position is limited to 1 year with possibility of extension up to 4 years based on the scientific performance, and is available immediately or upon agreement.
