Jobbeschreibung
(a)ll are welcome, regardless of gender, origin etc.
Empa's Electron Microscopy Center located in Dübendorf conducts forefront research in the development and application of new electron microscopy techniques in materials science, and has currently two PhD positions available to carry out cutting-edge research in two different projects:
The goal of the first project is to explore 4D-STEM (scanning transmission electron microscopy) modalities using an aberration-corrected microscope equipped with an energy filter and a fast, direct electron detector. You will be responsible for innovative, experimental studies aiming at phase and/or strain mapping, differential phase contrast imaging and energy-filtered electron ptychography employing new experimental approaches. As the data sets collected by 4D-STEM are large, an important aspect of the project is data handling and data analysis. You will also coordinate collaborations with internal and external research groups. In addition, simulations can be carried out to complement the experimental part of the project.
The second project aims at advancing the understanding of current nanoparticle synthesis routes and at developing alternative pathways for nanoparticles production in ionic liquids, e.g. to effi-ciently produce quantum dots. To study particle formation processes in situ and at the atomic scale, you will perform liquid phase scanning transmission electron microscopy (LP-STEM) experiments on an aberration-corrected microscope. Since the ionic liquids are, besides their outstanding properties as solvents, also useful for reaching high resolution in LP-STEM, you will identify such liquids that are optimal for both aspects. Therefore, you will not only be responsible for exploring new custom-tailored synthesis strategies, but also for further development of the experimental approach.
Please express in your cover letter in case you have a preference for one of the two projects.
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a Master's degree in materials science, physics, chemistry or a related discipline, preferably basic experience in analytical (scanning) transmission electron microscopy and scripting (e.g. Python). Further, you feel comfortable communicating and collaborating with your team members in a multicultural environment. With us, you receive a creative and supportive team and a multi-faceted range of tasks.
Empa supports equal opportunities such as the compatibility of work and other life areas and lives a culture of inclusion and respect. We are committed to increasing the diversity of our team, and strongly encourage women to apply.
The positions will be available as of January 2023 or upon agreement. The candidates will be enrolled at ETH Zurich in the Department of Materials. The positions are for a maximum duration of four years.
For further information about the position please contact Prof Dr Rolf Erni or Dr Debora Keller and visit our websites and
We look forward to receiving your online application including a letter of motivation, CV, diplomas with transcripts and contact details of two referees. Please upload the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered.
