PostDoc for eDNA analyses (bioinformatics) 80-100% (f/m/d) in Lausanne

Die Eidgenössische Forschungsanstalt für Wald, Schnee und Landschaft (WSL) befasst sich vor allem mit dem Schutz von Lebensräumen in der Natur.

Jobbeschreibung

The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

The Research Unit “Biodiversity and Conservation Biology“ studies the diversity of life in its various forms, from genetic diversity to the diversity of species and habitats and their interactions. For the national transdisciplinary applied research program with its fifth project phase “Resilient Rivers – Refugia, Connectivity, Stepping Stones 2022-2026”, the group “Ecosystem dynamics is looking from early 2024 for the duration of 2 years for a
The goal of the Postdoc project is to improve the understanding of the role of restoration measures on fungal diversity in riverscapes. You will design field sampling in collaboration with aquatic ecologists and hydraulic engineers and lead the bioinformatic analyses to assess the impact of habitat and flow regime restorations on habitat and species’ diversity. The work will include field campaigns in riverine habitats of small to mid-size rivers in Switzerland using eDNA sampling methods (spore traps, water filters, soil samples) to assess above and below ground diversity. The results on fungal diversity will be contrasted with findings of collaborating projects on insect diversity and structural elements in riverscapes. You will participate in a collaborative, transdisciplinary applied research project involving ecologists, engineers, and stakeholders in the context of river restoration and river ecology. You will be based at WSL in Birmensdorf and collaborate with researchers from the ETH domain, including hydraulic engineers (VAW ETH Zurich and PL-LCH EPF Lausanne) and aquatic ecologists (Eawag).
You hold a PhD degree with a solid expert knowledge in ecology and biodiversity, or a related field. Proven experience in bioinformatic skills for eDNA analyses and scripting languages (e.g., Python, R) is indispensable. Experience with fungal datasets and fungal morphological identification is an asset. The capability to develop new ideas independently and very good English skills (both written and oral) are necessary. You are a curious, self-reliant person who is also an excellent team player that values cooperation within an international and interdisciplinary team of researchers as well as practitioners in a national applied research project.

Please send your complete application to Michèle Bucher, Human Resources WSL, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered. Sabine Fink, phone +41 (0)44 739 28 36, will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information. The WSL strives to increase the proportion of women in its employment, which is why qualified women are particularly called upon to apply for this position.
