Jobbeschreibung

OASES quantifies the global environmental and social burdens associated with current Swiss production and consumption from a life-cycle perspective. It will substantially improve the current state of knowledge by adaptively coupling detailed process-specific inventory data from the ecoinvent database with multi-regional industry-sector specific input-output (MRIO) data from the EXIOBASE database. Within OASES, Empa is in charge of (i) identifying the pertinent raw materials supply risk indicators suitable for an integrated sustainability assessment based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, (ii) providing data to quantify priority supply risk indicators along existing supply chains relevant for the Swiss economy & support their implementation in the merged database, and (iii) evaluating the suitability of the risk indicators and the merged database to address future supply scenarios.

Suitable PhD candidates hold an MSc degree in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, or equivalent. He or she ideally is acquainted with the concept of raw materials criticality and LCA methodology, is ready to dive quickly into this ongoing project, has strong communication skills (in English and preferably also German) and is motivated to work in an inter- and transdisciplinary team in St. Gallen.

 

Suitable Postdoc candidates have a PhD in either of the above listed field. Experiences in the areas of raw materials criticality and LCA, strong communication skills ( in English and preferably German) and the readiness to quickly dive into this ongoing project are requested as well. The Postdoc candidate will spend part of the working time for similar acitivites in further challenging projects of Empa's Technology and Society Laboratory.

 

Starting date for this position is as soon as possible, with a foreseen duration until end of 2020.
